Monson-Thomas Donald Smart, 71, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ware, MA to the late Thomas and Sophie (Soltys) Smart, he has been a life long resident of Monson. Don was a self employed contractor for over 30 years. He and his wife Teresa operated Smart Builders in Monson, building many homes in Monson and the surrounding communities. Don was a pioneer in the home building industry advising many contractors over the years. He began his contracting career with Industrial Welding, a steel fabricating business that he operated for over 25 years. Don was the track welder at Thompson Motor Speedway and Stafford Motor Speedway. For over 20 years Don lived in Jamestown, RI during the summer months on his boat with his wife. He was passionate about fishing, hunting and Sprint Cup NASCAR racing.
Don leaves his wife of 34 years, Teresa M. (Pascale) Smart, a son Thomas D. Smart, Jr and his fiancee Carol Pascale of Monson; a step-daughter Kelly Brick Beaulieu and her husband Scott Beaulieu; a brother Richard T. Smart of Wilbraham and a sister, Sheila A. Koran and her husband Sam Koran of Monson; three grandsons Nicholas Smart, Andrew and Chad Beaulieu. Don was pre-deceased by his father and mother Thomas and Sophie Smart; his step-mother Irene Smart and a step-son John Brick.
Visiting hours will be held, Sunday July 8, 2012 from 3-6pm at Lombard Funeral Home 3 Bridge St. Monson. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 9, 2012 at First Church of Monson, 5 High St., at 1:30pm. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery also in Monson. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Baystate VNA and Hospice c/o Baystate Health Foundation 280 Chestnut Street, 6th floor, Springfield, MA 01199.
