Milton R. Barnes Jr.

December 18, 1943 — July 16, 2022

Monson-Milton R. Barnes, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 16, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Milton was born on December 18, 1943 in Northampton, Massachusetts to the late Milton R. Barnes, Sr. and Betty (Reynolds) Barnes. Milton was a beloved husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather—he delighted in his family and his love was returned in equal measure. Milton was a friend and mentor to many, with the gift of humor, wit, and hospitality that was enjoyed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Milton was a member of the first graduating class from Minnechaug High School in Wilbraham and continued his education at Bridgewater State University, graduating with a BS in Science in 1965. He went on to earn two Master’s degrees-- one from Westfield State University and the other from American International College. These educational experiences, combined with his teenage summers working as a seasonal school custodian and summer camp counselor, became the foundation on which Milton built a lifetime of teaching and learning. Milt taught 5th grade at Soule Road School in Wilbraham, MA and 7th grade Science at Wilbraham Middle School for over three decades. During his time as a public school teacher, he inspired many students to persevere and live their best lives; countless students still identify Milt as their “favorite teacher”. Milton left the classroom for three years to become a PALMS coordinator. It was in this position that he was able to share his love of teaching mathematics and science with colleagues. Once he retired, Milt spent 15 years teaching mathematics and science at Springfield College, and very much enjoyed his time working there as well.

Milton met his beautiful bride, Madeleine (Martin) Barnes at a teachers’ gathering in early 1966 and were married by June of that year. They have been inseparable ever since. Together they created a life blessed by God, and enjoyed a joyful marriage lasting 56 years. Milton is survived by Madeleine; their four children, Katherine (Jackie) Watts, Matthew (Kristen) Barnes, Timothy (Maria) Barnes, Anne-Marie (Gian) Nistico; and eight grandchildren, Emily, Cori, Emma, Aenea Noelle, Sam, Cecilia, Lovella, and Charlotte. Milton also leaves his loving sister, Carol Anne Barnes, and loyal brother-in-law, Richard Martin Jr. Our family rejoices in the memories created throughout Milt’s lifetime, both in Western Massachusetts and in Cape Cod. Milt has cultivated beautiful enduring friendships with many church friends, neighbors, and colleagues—please know that he loved each of you and your kindnesses were so appreciated, especially during his extended illness.

Milton achieved so much in his lifetime. He served in the United States Air Force 4 years active duty from 1967-1971, stationed in Biloxi, MI and Spokane, WA, and then spent the following 20 years in the reserves as a communications officer and budget officer at the 212th Engineering Installation Squadron and 104th Tactical Fighter Wing at Barnes Airport, retiring as a Lt. Colonel from the military after 24 years of service. He was extremely active in the church, as a senior warden at the Church of the Epiphany, member of the Episcopal Bishop’s Search Committee and the Commission on Ministry, Eucharistic Minister, HS Sunday school teacher, and member of Faith Alive and Cursillo Ministries.

Milton will be missed by all who knew him, but we are heartened that his suffering has ended and he is now with his heavenly father.
