John Hanic

John L. Hanic, age 89, of Monson, Massachusetts died May 20, 2010 while visiting his son in North Carolina.
Born in Fairfield, Connecticut, on December 21, 1920, he grew up in Wales, MA. In 1944 he married Dorothy Ruth Cantwell and moved to Monson. He has lived in Monson for the last 66 years. He was a member of Saint Patrick Church in Monson, the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He served Saint Patrick Church as Eucharistic Minister and Lector. In 1945 he went to work for C. F. Church Mfg. Co. in Monson as a Sander and Maintenance Man for 42 years. Upon retirement he worked as the groundskeeper at Bethany Cemetery for 21 years. In 1941, during World War II, he was drafted and served for 3 years and 1 month 20 days as a Technician Sergeant in the US Army. He served in the 3rd Army, under General Patton, in the 76th Infantry Division. While in the service he was engaged in battles in Ardennes, France, the Central Europe Battle of the Bulge, and in the Rhineland of Germany. For this service to his country he received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal, European, African, and Middle Eastern Theater Company Medal and 3 Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. He was graded as an Expert Carbine Rifleman, and received the Motor Vehicle Drivers Award as a Construction Equipment Mechanic. He is survived by three sisters, Stephania Hollay of FL, JoAnne Simpson and Emily Hollay of CT. His son, Fr. John D. Hanic of NC, his daughter, Joyce Aleta Anderson of Massachusetts; six grandchildren, Jonathan Hanic, Jennifer Wadsworth, Donald, James, and Amanda Anderson and Carey Morrison; six great-grandchildren Matthew Merrill, Camran and Camilla Wadsworth, Corrina and Oliver Morrison and Aliyah Spence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Patrick Church in Monson, MA on Wednesday, May 26, at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery in Monson, MA
