Monson-[Josephine] Joanne Sanborn, 100, of Brimfield Road, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center. Born September 30, 1908, in Chicago, Illinois, she was educated in Chicago Schools and Northwestern University. She married Walter W. Sanborn on August 13, 1938, in Washington, DC. Joanne was employed as a research assistant on staff for Harold L. Ickes, who was Secretary of the Interior Department under Franklin Delano Roosevelt from 1937-1945. She was later a secretary to the Director of Nurses at Monson State Hospital from 1957 to 1970. She was a former treasurer of the Monson Garden Club; and the first historian of the Monson Senior Citizen Club, hospitality chairman, PTA, former member of the Springfield Weavers' Guild, former member of the Springfield Naturalists Club, life member of the Monson Rod & Gun Club. Joanne was predeceased by her husband Walter W. Sanborn in 2002. She leaves her son, David Sanborn, of Monson, granddaughter Katherine Sanborn, of Longmeadow, and a sister, Eileen Weiskopf, of California. A memorial service will be held Saturday May 9, 2009, at 10 A.M. in the Lombard Funeral Home, 3 Bridge St. Monson, MA.
