HAMPDEN, MASSACHUSETTS: Formerly of East Northport, NY, Janice Thumm Woods, 89, passed away on October 17 at Wingate at Hampden. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill M. Woods in 1974 and by brothers Garold Thumm, Milford Thumm, and Byron Thumm, and by sister Phyllis Thumm Cunningham. Janice is survived by her children Suzanne Woods Kelley and her husband Douglas of Monson, MA; David Woods and his wife Julie Brocklehurst Woods of Geneseo, NY; and Steven Woods of Fredonia, NY. She is also survived by grandchildren Elizabeth Kelley O'Connor, Benjamin Woods, and Laura Woods; great-granddaughter Sara O'Connor; sister Doris Thumm Shank of Elkview, WV; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Janice was born on August 28, 1924, in Malden, WV, the fifth child of the Reverend George Wesley Thumm, a Methodist minister, and Myrtle Jarrett Thumm. She lived in multiple locations while her father served different churches across West Virginia. She was educated at Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) and the University of Illinois, where she met her husband-to-be while they were both in library school. She worked part-time as a librarian while her family was growing, and then full-time when her husband became ill. She retired in 1991 after 17 years as branch librarian of the Melville branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, visiting Oberammergau, Germany, Israel, and China. She was very active in the Commack United Methodist Church (CUMC), of Commack, NY, serving in leadership roles and singing for many years in the choir. She moved to Springfield, MA, in 2008 to be closer to her daughter.
The family wishes to thank Debra Kelley, Robbin Egge, and the staffs of Keystone Woods, Homewatch Caregivers, Wingate at Hampden, and Beacon Hospice for the loving care they gave to Janice. A memorial service will be held on Long Island at the CUMC in November. Burial will be in Red Oak, IA, in the Woods family plot. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation or to the Commack United Methodist Church.
