Biography

BRIMFIELD - On April 29, Edward Maurice Lundrigan, Jr. was involved in a fatal car accident and entered into eternal life. He was the husband of his beloved Sandra (Camerota) Lundrigan (who claimed her eternal reward nine months ago), the father of sons Stephen and Shawn (d) Lundrigan and daughters Maria Gray and Regina Graul, and father-in-law to Scott Gray and Christopher Graul. He took great pride in his grandchildren Deborah and Rachel Gray and Annabella and Nathaniel Graul.

He was born the son of the late Edward, Sr. and Margaret (McAleer) Lundrigan and was preceded in death by many aunts, uncles, cousins and his brother-in-law Donald Hatzipetro. Edward is survived by his sister Barbara Hatzipetro, his nephews Donald and Gary, and his nieces Barbara Ann, Cathy, and Christine.

After graduating from Cathedral High School in Springfield, Edward attended St. Michael's College in Vermont, and graduated with a degree in Chemistry. He began work as an engineer in the relatively young field of nuclear reactors. He was part of the team that worked on the USS Longbeach, which was the first nuclear surface craft in the U.S. Navy. However, this work did not prove fully satisfying, and he entered a long career as an educator, teaching mathematics at the junior high level as a prelude to his nearly 20 years teaching AP Physics at Classical High School in Springfield. During his time as a teacher he earned an M.Ed. from the Elms College and a C.A.G.S. from American International College. He finished up his teaching career at the new Central High retiring more than 15 years ago. In addition to his teaching, Edward was active in many causes, most notably the Pro Life movement; he was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, and was a professed member (30+ years) of the Secular Franciscan Order. Edward loved fishing, watching Red Sox games and old movies, playing cribbage, and spontaneously bursting into song - often with an Irish brogue.

Edward met the love of his life, Sandra, while she was a teller at the Worcester Federal Savings Bank in Springfield, Massachusetts. They shared 45 years of marriage until her unexpected death from cancer last year. They were both devout in their Catholic faith, and were active members of St. Christopher's Church in Brimfield where they worshiped for over 40 years. Since his beloved Sandra's death he only grew in appreciation of the great gift she had been in his life. He followed her inspiration and continued to strengthen his relationship with his children and become a more peaceful person in general.

He left this world in a chariot of bulky Detroit steel, ironically selected by him as a protection against such accidents. It was Sandra's car which he drove to feel a connection to her. He now joins his love in their eternal home. So long "Big Ed."

Calling hours will be on Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 pm at the Lombard Funeral Home in Monson. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday morning at 10:00am at St. Christopher's Church in Brimfield.
