Biography

Goose Creek, SC- Barbara E. (Brown) Chaffee, 82, died Thursday, May 3, 2012. Born August 22, 1929 in Stafford Springs, CT to the late Philip T. and Lena (Bolter) Brown she was educated in Brimfield, MA and Graduated from Hitchcock Free Academy in Brimfield, MA in 1947. She furthered her education and graduated from Westfield State College in 1964 with a BS in Elementary Education and earned her Special Education Certificate in 1971. She was a resident of Monson, MA until 2004. Barbara taught special education at Monson Developmental Center for 20 years and retired in 1984. She was a member of the Monson Unitarian Universalist Parish for over 40 years and a former member of the Eastern Star for over 30 years. She was a life member and the first secretary of the Monson Historical Society. Barbara volunteered at Wingate at Wilbraham Nursing Home, The Church Mouse Thrift Shop, and Monson Senior Center.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Robert E. Chaffee. She leaves her sons Raymond Chaffee of Middletown, CT, Roland Chaffee and his wife Ellen Murray-Chaffee of Goose Creek, SC with whom she resided since 2009, and Bruce Chaffee of Springfield, MA; daughters-in-law Michele Riley Chaffee of Ellington, CT and Ann Kamienski of Pittsfield, MA; a brother Harry Brown of Idaho Falls, ID and three granddaughters, Sarah, Erin and Danielle as well as many nieces and nephews, especially Dottie Rogowski of Three Rivers, MA with who she lived prior to moving to South Carolina. She also leaves her grandpuppies Molly and Maggie, grandhorse Flurry and that darn cat Sir Harvey the Busybody.

A memorial service will be held at the South Berkeley Senior Center in Goose Creek, May 12, 2012 at 2pm. A second Memorial service will be held September 22, 2012 in the Monson Unitarian Universalist Parish, Monson, MA. Private burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Hillside Cemetery in Monson, MA.
