Biography


Monson-Allen Lindsay Midyette of Crest Rd died at home, Thursday, August 8, 2013. He was the son of Allen Lindsay Midyette, Sr and Gertrud Ward Midyette of Fairfield, North Carolina. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and attended schools in Norfolk Virginia, Fairfield, North Carolina and Swan Quarter North Carolina. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1942 as a chemical engineer and Joined the US Navel Reserve as a Lieutenant. He served as a torpedo expert at Western Electric in New Jersey and in submarine service in Australia and the Philippines during WWII.

He married Virginia Carlson, also a Navy Officer in 1944. After the war they lived in Monson where Allen worked for the C.F. Church Co., as a research engineer. In 1966 he left to found Corex, Inc. on Cottage St in Springfield, which manufactured school furniture. He was president of Corex, Inc until 1985 when he retired.

He was interested in geology having traveled, as a boy and young man, with Horace Richards, a paleontologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, taking photographs and keeping journals on trips from South America and the Caribbean to Hudson Bay in Canada. He was also an avid bird watcher, studying birds especially on Cape Cod. He enjoyed traveling to Sweden visiting relatives and visiting the small town in France, Albas, where he made many friends.

He leaves his two nephews Norfleet and Mark of Elizabethtown, NC and his niece Deborah of Charlotte, NC, children of his brother Norfleet Midyette who predeceased him. He also leaves his wife's nieces Anne Waskom of DesMonies, Iowa, Martha Sullivan of San Rafael, CA and nephew, Reverend Mark Sullivan of Smyrna, Delaware and many good friends.

A Memorial Service will be held, Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11am in Lombard Funeral Home 3 Bridge Street in Monson. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Monson Free Library, 2 High St. Monson, MA 01057.
